Channel Swim Relay 2012
I will be swimming the English channel on the 17th of August 2012 as a two-man relay with the man like Matt, raising money for Diabetes UK.
Here's the science: The Channel is the ultimate swim - it's considered to be about as difficult and extreme a challenge as is possible - more people have stood on the top of Mount Everest than have swum the Channel.
The shortest possible distance is 34km, but tides mean that it can be double, and there are very real risks from hypothermia, de-hydration and sea-sickness, debris, jellyfish, and commercial shipping (the Strait of Dover is the busiest stretch of water in the world).
We'll be starting at 10pm on a Neap tide, swimming over-night in two-hour shifts and hopefully reaching France in around 12-14 hours...sometime around lunchtime if all goes well.
Fortunately, this is for a VERY GOOD CAUSE. Diabetes effects a number of my family and friends - and probably some of yours too - all of whom benefit from the support and help of Diabetes UK in coping with and managing this disease.
So, please be generous - every penny really DOES count. Oh, and if you are a UK taxpayer, please don't forget to include giftaid...
Thanks guys!
