Balanced Diet

Eating a balanced diet is very important to maintaining a health body. Food should be chosen from all of the main food groups and consumed in the correct proportions for optimal balance.

The main elements of a balanced diet are: -

Carbohydrates - These are required to give us energy. Starch is an excellent source of energy and is found in potatoes, pasta, bread and cereals. Glucose-rich foods are also important energy providers.

Protein - These are required to help the growth & repair functions in our body. Fish, meat, dairy products and dried beans are good sources of protein.

Fat - Like carbohydrates, fat is an important source of energy. Foods rich in unsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats should be chosen. Foods containing a high proportion of saturated fats should be avoided.

Vitamins - These are required to optimise a variety of internal functions. Vitamins A, B, C, D and E are all needed in a balanced diet.

Minerals - Iron, calcium, sodium and iodine are all important minerals needed to maintain the health of our inner body.

Fibre - We need fibre to aid digestion. Cereal, rice and vegetables are all good sources of fibre.

For more information on maintaining a balanced diet please review the resources on our site.
