Multi Gyms

Multi gyms have grown in popularity in recent years and manufacturers have worked hard to make them smaller and more versatile. Unlike free weights they are safe to use alone. The most familiar of these machines use one or more weight stacks attached to cables and a system of pulleys to provide resistance.

You put a ‘pin’ into the stack at the weight you want to lift. These are called ‘selectorised’ machines and are the most popular. There are machines that use other forms of resistance. Some of these use free weights attached to bars and others, the users body weight.

A multi-gym is designed to work out all the major muscle groups through a system of weights, cables, pulleys, handles and a bench, providing a real alternative to the traditional set of dumbbells and a lifting bench for weight training. Whilst arguably the latter when used correctly will provide better results, many home users prefer the more accessible, safe and structured format of a multigym.

Home multi-gyms and weight training machines have come a long way in recent years. Interest levels have increased and that rise in popularity has given manufacturers the spur they need to produce higher quality machinery which begins to rival and in some cases equal the qualilty seen in gyms and fitness rooms around the country.

What this means to you as a consumer is better quality equipment, more choice and a somewhat dizzying array of options out there. With this guide we attempt to help you understand the benefits of weight training, find the right multigym for your needs and suggest a few places to buy them online from specialist UK sports and fitness retailers
