Exercise Equipment

Choosing and using good quality exercise equipment is essential if you want to increase your fitness level and build your muscles. Essentially, there are three types of exercise equipment available - equipment that provides cardiovascular exercise only, equipment that provides resistance / bodybuilding workouts only, and equipment that combines both cardiovascular & resistance exercise.

Cardiovascular exercise is very important if you want to maintain a healthy heart and lungs, lose weight and increase your general fitness and endurance levels. A good set of cardiovascular equipment to have at home or in a gym include a treadmill and an exercise bicycle. Both provide a similar sort of workout, but exercise different sets of muscles in the legs. As an example, an exercise bicycle concentrates on the thigh muscles, whereas a treadmill provides the calf muscles with a good workout.

Resistance training is just as important as cardiovascular exercise in any workout routine. Resistance equipment builds muscles, primarily in the arms and upper torso. There is a variety of equipment available and all involve lifting or pulling weights. Just as with cardiovascular equipment, different types of resistance equipment exercise only certain muscle groups. If you are looking for equipment that provides both cardio and resistance then you'll need to go for a cross-trainer or a rowing machine.
