Aerobics

Aerobics is defined as any form of exercise in which oxygen levels in the blood become increased.

Exercise regimes essentially take on two forms - aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic exercises are long in duration but low on intensity. They require a constant feed of oxygen to the muscles to maintain performance and to build muscle mass. Aerobic exercises are activities that get the heart beating but don't have you gasping for air. Such activities include walking, jogging, biking, hiking, climbing, swimming and of course, aerobics exercise classes!

Anaerobic exercises on the other hand are of short duration but high on intensity. Exertion levels generally outweigh incoming oxygen levels, so starve muscles of the essential ingredient that they need to maintain performance. Anaerobic activities include sprinting and weightlifting.

Aerobic exercise is very beneficial to our bodies in several ways. It increases the capacity of the heart so it can pump the blood around the body with fewer beats. It also increases the size of our lungs, so they can process more air in fewer breaths. Overall, endurance and stamina is improved, along with better resistance to fatigue and an increase in lean muscle mass.
