Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure in which excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed from oversized breasts to create smaller and firmer breasts. During the operation the nipple and areola - the dark area of skin around the nipple - are repositioned to provide balance and a pleasing appearance to the re-shaped breasts.

Breast reduction surgery is completed under a general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make an incision around the breast, normally in a line following the natural curve of the breast where it meets the chest. Fat and glandular tissue is removed to make the internal dimensions of the breast smaller, and the nipple moved back into a central position. Finally, excess skin is trimmed and the incision closed.

Surgery for both breasts may take up to 3 hours. During the procedure the surgeon will take great care to insure that both breasts are of equal proportion and look aesthetically pleasing.

After surgery, swelling and pain may be experienced once the general anaesthetic wears off. The hospital will prescribe painkillers to help manage this, and an overnight stay will be required. Full recovery from breast reduction surgery can take up to 8 weeks.
